5 Ways to Find Calm on Election Day
5 Ways to Find Calm on Election Day
I live in Pennsylvania, a "must win" state. Candidates are making stops in several PA cities and towns as part of their last-blast campaign tours before people head to the polls tomorrow. I read an article in one of our local papers today that focused on Election Anxiety. Nearly 75% of United States voters feel stressed about our nation's future, with many saying the daily barrage of campaign news and marketing messages have taken a toll on their mental health.
Election Day can bring up stress, anxiety, and a sense of uncertainty. Here are five strategies to help you care for your mind, body, and spirit today and in the days to come.
1. Start Your Day with Intention
Set a Morning Intention: Start by choosing a simple word or phrase to focus on, such as “peace,” “trust,” or “presence.” Remind yourself of it throughout the day as a way to stay focused and centered.
2. Mindfulness Breaks to Ease Anxiety
Use the 5-4-3-2-1 Grounding Technique when you feel anxious. Identify 5 things you see, 4 things you can touch, 3 sounds you hear, 2 things you smell, and 1 thing you can taste. This simple exercise brings you back to the present and can calm racing thoughts.
3. Limit Digital Overload
Set specific times to check the news or social media, then step away from screens. Taking these breaks helps reduce stress and keeps you from feeling overwhelmed by constant updates. Use this extra time to connect with loved ones or enjoy a hobby.
4. Spend Time in Nature
If possible, go outside for a walk, or just to sit in nature. Fresh air and green spaces are proven to reduce stress. Take a few deep breaths, observe the beauty around you, and feel gratitude for God’s creation. In times of stress it's especially important to acknowledge the good things happening around you.
5. A Prayer for Peace
Finally, take a moment for prayer to center your heart and mind. Here’s a short, calming prayer to say anytime you feel overwhelmed:
“God, help me find peace in your presence. Guide my thoughts, calm my spirit, and allow me to trust in your love and wisdom. Amen.”
Let’s focus on peace, kindness, and faith this Election Day, and always.
