5 Signs It's Time for a Workday Reset
From time to time, you've probably reached the end of your workday and wondered, "Why am I so exhausted?"
It usually isn't one big thing. More often, it's the little things that add up throughout the day, like a skipped lunch, one more meeting, or too much screen time.
You don't have to wait until you're completely drained to take care of yourself. In fact, the best time to reset is often before you feel overwhelmed.
Here are five signs your mind and body may be asking for a workday reset.
1. You're Reading the Same Email Over and Over
You know the feeling. You've read the same paragraph three times, but nothing seems to stick.
When your focus starts to fade, pushing harder usually isn't the answer.
Instead, step away for a couple of minutes. Refill your water bottle, stretch, or simply look away from your screen and focus on something in the distance. Giving your brain a brief break can help you return with fresh eyes.
2. Your Patience Is Running Low
Maybe you're more irritated than usual, or feeling frustrated by little things that normally wouldn't bother you.
Sometimes what feels like impatience is really mental fatigue.
Before responding to that email or jumping into your next meeting, take a few slow, deep breaths. If you can, stand up and walk for a minute or two. A short pause can completely change how you respond.
3. You've Been Sitting for Hours
It's surprisingly easy to lose track of time during a busy workday. Suddenly, you realize your shoulders are tight, your neck is sore, and you've barely moved all morning.
Movement is important, and it doesn't have to mean a workout. Walking around the office, taking the stairs, or stretching while your coffee brews all count.
Even a few minutes of movement can boost your energy and help you feel more alert.
4. You're Multitasking Everything
Answering emails during meetings, checking messages while eating lunch, thinking about tomorrow while finishing today's work...
When everything is happening at once, it can feel like we're getting more done. In reality, multitasking can leave us feeling scattered and mentally drained.
Try giving one task your full attention, even if it's only for the next ten minutes. You'll often find you accomplish more while feeling less stressed.
5. You're Bringing Work Into the Rest of Your Day
Your computer may be shut down, but your mind is still at work. Maybe you realize you're replaying conversations, thinking about tomorrow's deadlines, or answering "just one more email."
A healthy workday includes a healthy ending.
Before you leave your workspace, jot down your top 3 "Must Dos" for tomorrow, clear your desk, and be finished for the day. Creating a simple closing routine can make it easier to be fully present with the people and activities waiting for you at home.
Small Resets Make a Big Difference
One of the biggest takeaways from our recent Work Well, Live Well Take Care Tips Live was this: wellness shouldn't wait until the weekend.
Small resets throughout the day can help you feel more focused, less stressed, and more energized at work, and long after your workday is over.
Take 10
Choose one workday reset to practice this week:
Stretching between meetings.
Taking a real lunch break.
Stepping outside for five minutes before heading home.
You don't have to change your entire routine overnight. One small reset at a time can make your workday feel lighter and help you bring your best self to the people and moments that matter most.
