What brings you back to yourself?

Simple ways to make more room for peace, purpose, and the things that renew you

There are moments when you just feel more like yourself.

Maybe it happens during a quiet cup of tea before the day gets going. During prayer. On a walk. In the car with a favorite song playing. Around the dinner table. At church. Outside. Talking with someone who knows you really well.

Those moments can tell us something.

They give us clues about the people, practices, places, and experiences that help us feel grounded, connected, and renewed.

And they’re worth paying attention to.

Start by noticing

Think about the last few weeks.

When have you felt peaceful? When have you felt deeply present? When have you felt connected to your faith, your values, another person, or something meaningful to you?

You may find that your answers are surprisingly ordinary.

A conversation. A walk. Making dinner. Sitting outside. Helping someone. Reading. Music. Prayer. Creating something. Laughing with your family. A few minutes of silence before everyone else wakes up.

Write down three moments that come to mind.

Then look for the common thread.

Maybe you need quiet to feel renewed. Maybe being with people fills you up. Maybe you feel most grounded when you're outside. Maybe faith is at the center. Maybe serving other people gives you a strong sense of purpose.

There’s useful information in those answers.

Pay attention to what gives your life meaning

Purpose can sound like a very big word.

In everyday life, it often shows up in very familiar places.

It can live in the people we care for, the work we do, the faith we practice, the communities we belong to, the things we create, the causes we support, and the ways we contribute to someone else's life.

Try finishing this sentence:

One thing that feels especially meaningful to me right now is __________.

Then ask yourself another question:

How am I making room for it?

You may see an opportunity for one small change.

Create a small daily practice

Choose one thing that helps you feel grounded and give it a regular place in your day.

Spend five minutes in prayer when you wake up. Write down something you're grateful for before bed. Take a short walk after lunch. Call someone you love on your way home. Sit outside with your morning coffee. Read something that inspires you.

Keep it simple enough to become part of real life.

Let connection count

Some of the experiences that renew us happen with other people.

A focused conversation can change the direction of a day. So can sharing a meal, attending a faith service, helping a neighbor, volunteering, checking on a friend, or spending time with someone who makes you feel completely at home.

Think about the people who help you feel more balanced.

Maybe one of them deserves a call today.

Make room for more of it

You probably already have things in your life that bring you peace, meaning, connection, and joy.

This week, notice them.

Notice what you look forward to. Notice when you feel present. Notice what leaves you feeling renewed. Notice the people who bring out something good in you.

Then choose one of those things and give it a little more room.

Start with ten minutes, and see what happens.
